April 19, 2007Anger as cult French radio is silenced
A decision by communications watchdogs to ban broadcasts of a French radio station from the airwaves has provoked stinging criticism from listeners.
Throughout the last decade Paris-based FIP radio has attracted a massive cult following in Brighton after a fan grew so smitten with the station he set up an antenna in his Hanover home to broadcast it to the city.

April 13, 2007These cereal packets are hard to ignore on the shelves. Great colour combinations, unusual sized packets, textured (and tactile) matt board suggesting authenticity. A lot of care and attention has gone into this range by the designers. I always felt the silver foil-blocking was unnecessary. And working against the mood of a unique depth and honesty . But yesterday I opened my cupboard door, and the light caught the silver and winked at me. So I looked again. Then I put the coco-pops back and got these out instead. If this has the same effect in the supermarket, it’s a very good decision. But the overlit brightness may hamper any such subtlety.

April 13, 2007I hope david doesn’t mind me linking to his image of this book. He’s just posted some suggestions to minimise colour print problems.
I’m pleased to say there are no surprises for me amongst his ideas. In fact, I’ve got this book, as it’s great to show clients to illustrate what their logo etc will look like when printed somewhere in 4 colour, as opposed to just on their pantone business cards.
But the 24000 colours frightens me. Even after 20 years, I always find the initial selection of colours for a project tricky. Too often it’s a bit of a stab in the dark. With a lot of refinement after. I find colour psychology too predictable, and “I like those colours together” not rigorous enough. I need colour help.
D&AD Flag
April 11, 2007First thing I do most days is crank up the mac, and check out ben’s blog. Neither the visual feast of richard’s glorious postings, nor the friendly and erudite banter of david (who recently revealed ‘discipline’ is the cornerstone of his blogging) quite match ben’s emphasis on creativity. So I was surprised when he began showing some images for a d&ad project. They seemed bland and uninvolved. I described them as ‘like homework’. Seems I was right, he was working on something hush hush, and he’s come up with the goods. With a d&ad mask. I love the way the second ‘d’ is like a distorted mouth. Attaboy! Though the clothes suggest local post office robbery, rather than liberation rebels, or kendo nagasaki. Get more info from the horse’s mouth here…
